Selecting the Perfume that is Right for You

Selecting the perfume that is right for you can be a tricky process. After all, you need a scent that reflects your personality or even your mood at the time. You may also wish to have several different perfumes to suit different occasions. For this reason, there are several factors you need to keep in mind when selecting the perfume that is right for you.

Consider Your Audience

Most people don't wear perfume just to please themselves. Rather, they do it in order to smell good to others. When selecting a new perfume, consider who you will be smelling good for. If you are going to wear the perfume at work, for example, you might not select the same type of perfume you would wear when going out on a date.
You have to be particularly careful when selecting a perfume to wear at work. This is particularly true if you work around other people. If you work closely with other people, your scent can actually be offensive or bothersome. In addition, many people suffer from allergies from perfumes or develop headaches if the perfume is too strong. For this reason, some workplaces have developed restrictions on perfume use. Check into these guidelines and be sure to select a perfume that will not bother those around you.

Experiment with Longevity

Not all perfumes maintain a scent for an extended period of time, while others will stay on you for up to 24 hours. If you will be wearing the perfume all day and will not have a chance to reapply it throughout the day, you will need a perfume that will be long lasting. Similarly, if the perfume has an animal base, the scent will last for quite some time. This can be a drawback if you are planning to go out after work and want to switch scents before doing so.

Cover All of the Notes

Perfumes are made in layers, with the top note giving you the first impression of the scent. The middle note is the heart of the perfume while the bottom note is primary scent that will be left behind. Before making a purchase, wear a sample for at least two hours to ensure that you smell each layer. This way, you can make sure you enjoy the scent that the perfume ultimately reveals itself to be.

Get a Second Opinion

After a scent has been on your body for a while, it can become difficult to still smell it for its true scent. Over time, your olfactory senses become accustomed to the scent and can block it out altogether. Since others will still smell you as you come and go - even when you no longer can - it is always a good idea to get a second opinion on a new scent. Ask a friend or significant other to give you an honest opinion regarding how the perfume smells on you and the impression of you that it gives before making your final purchasing decision.

Make a Connection

Fragrances typically connect to a wearer in one of three ways. The first is expressing your mood or who you are. The other is to evoke feelings of nostalgia to a person, place, or experience. The final connection is style. With this type of connection, the scent matches your clothes, makeup, and general taste. Find a scent that allows you to connect in at least one of these ways, and you will have a good one to add to your collection.
